Whitesboro’s settlement began in 1784, shortly after the founding of the United States. Originally called Che-ga-quat-ka, from the Iroquois language, it was later renamed after an early settler Hugh White, who is featured on the town sale in a friendly wrestling match with a Native American. Legend has it this was how he gained the respect of the Oneida people for whom the county is named. According to the 2010 census, Whitesboro is currently home to 3772 people.
